AI’s biggest companies are embracing oversight—but critics question whether the proposed watchdogs would be truly independent.

POLITICO reports that OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, and lawmakers are increasingly supporting third-party safety audits for powerful AI models. The bipartisan FRONTIER Act would require major developers to give independent verification organizations access to evaluate whether models are being developed safely. Supporters view audits as a practical compromise between minimal regulation and a ban on advanced AI.

Critics argue that many potential auditors have financial, personnel, or ideological ties to leading AI companies, creating risks of weak enforcement and regulatory capture. Others warn that compliance costs could disadvantage startups while cementing established companies’ dominance. Some lawmakers favor direct government approval of AI models, while opponents advocate fines, criminal penalties, and open-source protections instead.

The central unresolved question is who will oversee the AI industry—and who will ensure those overseers remain independent, competent, and accountable.
